South Texas Reference Laboratories (STRL) provide a wide range of support services for faculty and staff of the Health Science Center as well as services to outside entities on a fee-for-service basis. We offer both technical services and diagnostic interpretation as requested by the client.

Our services include

Chromosome Analysis: All tissue types including Amniotic Fluid, Chorionic Villi, Products of Conception, Blood, Bone Marrow, Effusions, Skin Biopsy, Solid Tumors or Lymph Nodes, etc., Our full-service clinical & molecular cytogenetics laboratory has the capability to perform routine karyotyping (G-banding), as well as Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) studies for prenatal and most cancer related conditions. The laboratory may also provide karyotyping or FISH analysis for research projects.

Fungus Testing Laboratory: Fungal identification, in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing of yeasts and moulds, measurement of levels of antifungal agents in biological tissues and fluids, molecular identification and strain relatedness studies, fungal serologies for Coccidioides immitis and Aspergillus sp. galactomannan, clinical trials, environmental sampling analysis and drug discovery research.

Flow Cytometry: Immunophenotypic analysis by multiparameter flow cytometry which is useful in the diagnosis/classification of acute leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the detection of residual leukemia/lymphoma following therapy. Also, immunodeficiency panels, CD34 enumeration and detection of hemoglobin F in feto-maternal hemorrhage. Results are reported within 24-48 hours of receiving the sample.

Molecular Diagnostics: development and performance of molecular diagnostic test for nucleic acid targets found in a variety of settings in medicine. The primary focus of the laboratory is hematopathology; a selection of genetic and infectious disease tests are also performed. Results of PML-RAR alpha can be reported within 24-48 hours of receiving samples.

Surgical Pathology Diagnostic Services: Oral, Renal and Skin Biopsy services utilizing routine histology, special stains and immunoflourescence. The laboratory also provides Immunohistochemistry, Muscle histochemistry, Insitu-hybridization, FISH and ELISA studies.

Electron Microscopy laboratory is a full service facility that provides technical and professional support for patient care and research studies that require transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

  OUR MISSION
The mission of the South Texas Reference Laboratories is to provide state-of-the art clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory testing for the care of patients in South Texas and beyond.

The aim of the STRL is to provide reliable up-to-date specialty testing, accurate interpretations, and rapid turn around to local hospitals, medical offices, and to facilities in South Texas and beyond. Patient safety is of utmost concern, and is promoted through a quality management program of risk reduction and continuous improvement.

The STRL of the Department of Pathology at the Health Science Center offers a broad range of specialty testing for patients in San Antonio, South Texas, and around the world. Our service areas are user friendly and our goal is to provide our clients with the best services possible for the testing offered by our laboratories.

This site describes the scope of the reference laboratory tests available from each of our laboratories. Each section of the STRL is headed by a Medical Director in association with a chief technologist. The laboratories are CLIA approved and inspected by the College of American Pathologist. Inquires may be made to the STRL telephonically or by electronic means. This STRL website provides additional contact information and requirements for submitting specimen to the laboratories.
